To start a family is practically everyone’s dream. With your own family, you find new meaning and purpose in life. There’s a different feeling of fulfillment in raising kids with the love of your life. Unfortunately, not everyone has the capacity to start their own family, biologically speaking. Not everyone can bear offspring and that is where fertility test bears meaning to this.

Infertility is a reproductive system condition that hinders conception of a child. It is a common case among women, but infertility among men is not uncommon. In fact, in 20% of infertile couples, the problem is attributed to men.

Infertility is not solely a ‘woman’s problem’. The difficulty in conception could either be because of the man or the woman but there are also cases that it is a combination of fertility factors of both man and woman. There are also a few cases of infertility problems where the causes are unknown. In the United States, 10-15 percent of couples suffer from infertility. Its diagnosis is normally given to couples who have been trying to get pregnant for a year but to no avail.

There are many possible causes of infertility. Conception problems can be credited to different factors and it varies from men and women.

Infertility in Women

In women, ovulation problem is deemed as the most common cause of infertility. Ovulation occurs once a month, about 2 weeks before the start of the menstrual period. It is the release of eggs from the ovary. Without ovulation, a woman cannot get pregnant. Ovulation disorders are caused by hormonal imbalance from various causes. Blocked fallopian tubes can also cause women to be infertile. It is not as common as ovulation problems in rendering women infertile but it does occur. The fallopian tube is where the sperm of a man and the egg of a woman meet for fertilization. If the fallopian tube is blocked, then fertilization will not materialize hence, the woman won’t get pregnant. Blocked fallopian tube could be due to infection, surgery, or other causes. A physical problem in the uterus is another less common cause of fertility complications.

Other factors such as old age, stress, weight problems, improper diet, smoking, heavy consumption of alcohol, diabetes, radiation treatment, and health problems that cause a hormonal change in a woman’s body can also contribute in decreasing a woman’s chance of being pregnant.

Infertility in Men

Infertility in men has several causes. Azoospermia is the condition where there is absolutely no sperm production while Oligospermia is the condition where there are only a few sperm produced. The two aforementioned conditions are the direct reasons for difficulty in conception but there are also underlying causes behind such conditions.

Sexually transmitted diseases or genital infections can cause men to be infertile. Treating the infection resolves the fertility problem.

Physical damage to the testicles can also cause fertility problems. In some cases, in-born blockage in the testicles can prevent sperm from being in the semen. Undergoing surgery can sometimes address the problem.

Sexual problems such as erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation also have an effect on men’s fertility. Exposure to toxins, environmental hazards, and too much heat can also lower sperm count.

When should you get tested?

If you have been trying to conceive for a year or more but have been unsuccessful, it is imperative that you visit a doctor. Doctors will conduct examinations to determine the disorders that contribute to the fertility problem. Further tests and analyses will also be done if the problems are not determined in the initial examinations. For men who are too embarrassed to go to a doctor and get tested, you can have a semen analysis at home. Testing kits can be bought over-the-counter if you want to do screening tests on your own.

Detecting the problem as soon as possible increases the chance of successfully treating it. Late treatment of the problem may aggravate the condition and completely take away the chance of conception.
