Tail for Win32
Written by techieDan on April 30, 2008 – 11:57 amHow many of us has used unix that we sometimes hate to look though the error and server logs for details. Sometimes it’s bothersome that the error log is so big that it’ll take awhile before it can open that log file. Well, for experienced unix users, they will know how to make use of the tail function which allows them to see the last few lines of the log file.
Now how about if one person backups the log file and brings it back home and starts it in Microsoft Windows. Opening the 1Gb error log file using a double click would be overkill, so if you haven’t heard of Tail for Win32 by Paul Perkins, then you should get one.

What this program does is that it function exactly like the tail -f command of unix. Now everything is made easy like that.

Wordpress 2.5.1 Bug Fixes
Written by techieDan on April 26, 2008 – 2:09 amLooks like Wordpress has done it again. Another 70 other new enhancements or rather the negative term, bug fixings and stuffs for the current 2.5 but we all know in the software world, there is definitely bound to be bugs and errors. So don’t we all just love our programmers to the max.
Well, after being away for almost a week, it’s time for me to rekindle this blog back to it’s feet. One most important feature that I will think will help is the new Media Uploader. Previously I have to alter my .htaccess file manually or rather overwrite the current one with the corrected .htaccess file.
I heard that Wordpress 2.5.1 has already fixed that bug. Well if you’re a Wordpress user, you will truly understand what I meant by that. So let’s all keep our fingers crossed and hope for more improvements from the guys at Wordpress. ![]()

Alexa Ranking Dramatic Shift
Written by techieDan on April 17, 2008 – 8:56 amIt was 8:30am in the morning 17th April 2008(to the States it might be 8:30pm 16th April) and I logged in into my Personal Computer. Guessed what, I was shocked to see my Alexa Ranking dropped from 700k to 2 million ++. Oh my, what is happening??
I think that Alexa has started to change their ranking for webs and blogs alike. I see a sudden dramatic change to the alexa ranking that I was trying to search for an answer on the world wide web. Seems so far not a tid bit mention about it.
Either they have gone the google ranking way and decided to modify and enhance their codes. Or they perhaps had some glitch in their code and debugging it. Well, imagine from 700k to 2 million drop is a lot. I would go for the new codes that they are implementing. Let’s wait for more news from Alexa before we confirm it yeah.
Slight Update : Looks like it was announced on Alexa Blog with the new Alexa Ranking system.
Some excerpts from the site….
aggregate data from multiple sources to give you a better indication of website popularity among the entire population of Internet users.
You gave us many other suggestions as well, and we are working hard to implement them. We won’t tell any secrets just yet, but you can expect to see new features rolled out over the coming weeks and months.
Looks like we can look forward to a new style of rank for Alexa Rank

Popularity Contest Plugin Fatal Error
Written by techieDan on April 15, 2008 – 9:09 pmUpdate April 16 2008 : I find that people are saying what is happening to their plugin even after they did what I did. Well, if you’re a first time setting up this plugin. Please do what was mentioned in Ken’s web. Anyway, for easier access, you can download the patched version of the plugin it directlyfrom Ken. Note you’ll still need to make the database changes if you don’t have the tables already in place.
Alex King’s wordpress plugin which goes by the name of Popularity Contest has the best popular post plugin. It gives a lot of information thus helping bloggers to judge what readers usually read. Well, sad to say, I did face an error when I converted my Wordpress from 2.3 to 2.5. No error whatsoever at first, that was until I went and deactivate the popularity contest plugin.
The outcome?? After I tried to reactivate the plugin, it went bonkers and kept giving Fatal Error message. So off I go to search and found a help in Ken’s web. In his site, you can either download his latest patched file or rather you can just modify the popularity-contest.php and changed the following.
Open popularity-contest.php and scroll down to line 59.
Replace require(’../../wp-blog-header.php’); with require(’../wp-blog-header.php’);
This somehow solves my problem perfectly. So it tells me to be prepared for Wordpress 2.5 compatibality issues.

Twisted Snake
Written by techieDan on April 12, 2008 – 2:39 pmWell, I’ve haven’t been to the zoo for a very long time. We all know how twisted it was, snakes with linkage to serpents in the time of Adam are “twisted”. So I went and paid a visit to the National Zoo in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Went and have a look at this snake.

This snake is coiling up, seems kinda twisted to me. Or rather they can twist good as well.
