Being a techie, looking for new technologies and learning more about your area of interest is definitely one of the traits. Though, being a techie also makes one go through the internet to search for reading materials and tutorials in order to beef oneself. Buying a book seems a waste of money when everything could be sought after on the Internet.

TechieDan has got his latest bargain, in order to further strengthen his hold on Spring MVC, he got himself a book. Yes, a book bought straight from the store. Published by APress and written by Seth Ladd, Darren Davison, Steven Devijver and Colin Yates. The book is titled Expert Spring MVC and Web Flow.

Some people may mentioned why did I get the book instead of looking for resources online? Well, nothing beats the old school in me, reading anywhere I wanted, and flipping the pages and being in places where there’s no signal or internet connection. Also another reason, is that I got this book at a bargain price. It’s only RM40 (that’s like US $12++). The original retail price on the book is US $44.99. Not everytime you’ll have this bargain.

It looks like Malaysia is finally deserving an equally fast connection for both it’s home and office usage. From speed of 10Mbps up till 1Gbps. Word has it that High Speed Internet Access (HSBB) will be launched on the 24th March 2010, which on this article writing date is tomorrow. Process of integrating this option will be done gradually.

The Klang valley would have the first benefit of doubt to see how efficient this HSBB would be.

Here is TM’s statement on it’s website regarding HSBB.

High Speed Broadband (HSBB) is a broadband service that offers bandwidth delivered at network speeds of 10Mbps and above. Unlike normal broadband connections which deliver bandwidth at network speeds ranging between 256kbps and 4Mbps, basic HSBB packages will eventually allow Malaysians to experience high speed Internet of up to 100 times faster than the usual rate while business will be able to have maximum speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps (1Gbps).

HSBB will initially be deployed via DSL in the Klang Valley, Iskandar Malaysia and key industrial zones throughout the country. It is expected that 1.3 million premises will have the ability to access HSBB coverage by end 2012.

Link Here

So Malaysians or people residing in Malaysia can finally say bye bye to slow turtle connection? But there seems to be another problem. What about the pricing of such high speed broadband. Is it within budget? Will the consumer have to pay loads to get this broadband.

As of current pricing, a 512kbps is still paying RM66 while a 1Mbps is paying RM88 based on what it used to give previously. How much more will a 10Mbps broadband cost? What about those with 1Gbps?

All these would be revealed the following day on 24th March 2010. So Internet users, is time to anticipate this new HSBB.

TechieDan.com might face a few hours downtime on the 24th of February 2010 as it’s host is doing a migration of data to another location. To know what’s the full scope of this data migration, here’s an excerpt of what’s going to happen.

This is a reminder that your Linux shared hosting services will be migrated to the new data center on the 24th Feb 2010. Please find below the additional details concerning the migration:

Actual physical server migration date / time: 9.00pm GMT+8 24 Feb 2010
Expected Interruption hours: 5 – 9 hours (9.00pm 24 Feb 2010 – 6.00am 25 Feb 2010)

=============================
Activity Progress Sheet
=============================

1.We will power down the server at the existing data center.
2.Wrap and pack the servers nicely to avoid any hardware issue during the servers transportation to the data center (from Cyberjaya to AIMS KL data center)
3.Un-wrap the server upon our arrival at the new data center and conduct a power test at the data center staging room to ensure there’s no power issue which may possibly trip the data center’s power source. Server will be shut down once again upon the successful power test.
4.We will rack the server into the server rack and power up the server.
5.We will start the IP renumbering on the server once the server is powered-on at the server rack. We expect to take about 30-45 minutes for each server renumbering to complete.
6.The entire migration process complete.

In the case you’re trying to access TechieDan.com on that specific date, I would humbly apologise but TechieDan.com will be back shortly after that.

After years of technical appraisal and tutorials, TechieDan.com has now reached another whole new level with the current Page Rank going up to 2. It’s been 2 hard years and finally today it’s a day to celebrate.

Page Rank is by Google and though it might not actually affect your SEO, it’s also a good way to gauge your website unless of course if your blog/website was previously banned by Google, or they just want to ‘unrank’ you.

Cut the long story short, there will be more things upcoming. As for now, it’s just a celebration post. It might be small for some of you, but it sure is a big thing for TechieDan for now.

After being in the limelight as the new source of Java with it’s new improved method of writing the Java language, Java 5 (J2SE 5) has reached it’s EOLS (End Of Life Service) and is now put into the archives page of the Sun Java’s page. Looks like Java 5 is going to phase out after it went into EOLS on the 3rd of November 2009.

Here’s the excerpt taken from Sun Java 5.0 Page.

J2SE 5.0 End of Service Life Notice

J2SE 5.0 reached its End of Service Life (EOSL) on November 3, 2009, which is the date of the final publicly available update of version 5.0 (J2SE 5.0 Update 22).

Customers interested in continuing to receive critical fixes, are encouraged to consider the following options:

Migrate to Java SE for Business 1.5 Read More

Migrate to the latest Java SE release Read More

For developer needs, all products that have completed the EOL transition period, including the last Java SE release of 1.5, have been moved to the Archive area.

From Java 1.4 to Java 5 was quite a transition. Now since that Java 5 has now gone in EOLS period, what’s in store for the Java developers and researchers out there? It looks like time will tell. JDK 7 is still in beta and currently available for DOWNLOAD. As of date of print, here is the link to download the latest JDK 7 from Sun. Now what will the final JDK 7 be in store for us, time will let us know. So, so long Java 5, you have been around and it’s time for you to go. Looks like those planning to take their SCJP exams now have to catch up on Java 5 concepts and work towards Java 7.

TechieDan has finally made it past the Page Rank 0. A few months back, TechieDan.com was hit by the Google Ranking from a Page Rank of 2 to 1 then to 0. Realising the fact that due to insufficient updates these days, a few blog posts was released and TechieDan has now reached it’s Page Rank 1.

In a way though, Page Rank is still an amusing and complicated thing to comprehend. Believing that other than building links, the calculation would have been a lot more complex. Though suspicion of Google calculating page rank of a site seems a bit undefined. For example, if one owns a blogspot and that blog has not been updated for a very long time, (for instance one of my blogspot blogs), it still maintain it’s PR3 rank.

Some tools which TechieDan use to determine it’s Page Rank is from PrChecker, a simple direct PR display tool and PrCheckingTool, one that can determined whether there was any response to a banned PR ranking. TechieDan personally likes the 2nd tool, as it’s able to determine whether any one of my sites got banned for Page Ranking.

Well, anyway since it’s the mark of a new PR1 rank here, what about the rest of the people out there? Is this new update of PR something new to discuss.
